Ever since my Channel 30 Chinese Drama ended few days ago, I have nothing to be occupy myself with, since the new drama Trimming Success doesn't seem to interest me. Well, Kevin Cheng, the main actor is attractive, however there are no pretty actress and interesting dialogues in that show. So, I'd confined myself in this study room, not to knock some knowledge regarding Economics or to work my brains off calculating Mathematics but instead, I did my so-called online reseach for another of my General Paper Assignment and to write my essay. Due to some distractions, I spent a straggling four hours to complete my 677 words essay. Since it's my 'full with blood and sweat' piece of work, I shall pen it down here. Afterall, I need to waste some time now, as I'm dead bored home alone.
The question is: Does the traditional family have a future?
A family consists of a domestic group of people typically affliated by birth, marriage or relationships including domestic partnership and adoption. Traditionally, a family is a unit consisting of a married couple with children, where the husband is the sole breadwinner of the family while the wife stays home to care after the children and keep the home at tip-top condition. These were the common ways of life which we have been adhereing to for a long. However, based on statistics, the traditional family accounts only five percent of American household. Due to major social and culture revolution in most part of the world in the recent decades, the traditional family is disappearing.
Before a group of rebel led by students revolt against sexual injustice and oppression against women in the 1960's, women were confined to their homes. After that, women have not only joined the working labour force but also became highly educated and capable in all fields including businesses and politics. As a result from that, women are sharing roles with their husband in the working society to support their family financially. Resulting from this, time spent with children are lesser as the work place occupies a hearty portion of one's time.
In the hustle bustle of a city, one's lifestyle is definitely more hectic and stressful. This is because there is stiff competition in work place. To excel in the highly sought after and 'glamourous' corporate world, one have to outdo another competitor by working longer hours. In the course of climbing the corporate ladder, some members of a family, which incluses a parent or child might not even return home for dinner with his or her family. Even if they do return home for dinner, these busy working people do not spend quality time with their family as they will be mentally occupied with work on hand from office. *This point sucks*
Apart from that, different level of education and income will aslso tear apart a traditional family. For example, the writer's neighbour *yea rite* have five children. Out of the five children, four are uneducated and not doing well financially. On the contrary, one of them is a famous doctor in town. Resulting from this, the four siblings suffers communication breakdown with their 'doctor' sibling as their ideas and perception of things differ.
The question 'does the traditional family have a future?' is also affected by people's mentality and attitude towards morality. The sexual behaviors of teenagers and young adults changed considerably/significantly *still thinking which sounds better* over the recent decade. Some youngsters do not seem to care about virginity and the implications of premarital sex. The increase of premarital pregnancies has led to many social problems. This unhealthy activity is definitely not the holy characteristic of a traditional family. The social problems that could happen includes early marriages and divorces. The exam for early marriages and divorces is Britney Spears. She was married twice while still 24 years old and her first marriage only lasted 52 hours. Other implications include broken family and abandoning infant which was borned out of premarital pregnancies. *took an hour to think of this*
One last point is, traditional family face attacks from the media. Many tabloids have reported that some artists do not have close relationship or not in good terms with their family members. For example, Lindsay Lohan is constantly telling the world about her ill relationship with her father while Eminem only raps about his angst towards his wife. Popstarts play a significant role in showing good examples as they have big influence towards their young fans. In addition to that, the widespread of negative elements in the internet such as pornography also corrupts young minds. These negative elements only contribute in today's decline in trational family values.
If these problems continue to threaten the society, it is very hard for a traditional family to have a future. Problems like hectic lifestyle, materialistic attitude, decline in society's mentality and morality as well as attacks from media will only cause a further dramatic decline in percentage of traditional families, To prevent this from happenning, we must play out roles by practicing what a traditional family does at home. We must start from the simplest such as addressing the elders by proper greeeting and having dinner together everyday. Everyone in the world should accept the fact that blood is thicker than water and traditional family values should perpetuate down to future generations.
----The End----
Yesterday, all of us skipped mentor mentee. Ms teh questioned us today. I'd to admit it was indeed very rude of us for not having the courtesy to inform her that nobody was going for mentor-mentee.
I went to Subang Parade yesterday, to hunt for my phone. I have decided to buy myself an O2 Xda Atom, same as Ian's one. However, the price of that phone at Subang Parade was unreasonably higher than the market price. I was introduced to a new PDA phone called HTC touch. The name sounds lame, however, this company is the manufacturer of O2 and Dopod phone. HTC bought over Dopod too, from next month onwards, Dopod will dropped that ug-ge-ly name and will carry the name HTC. Well, the name didn't really appeal to me, but the looks of the phone! GOSH. It's one cm shorther than Razr, and 28 grams lighter than Razr! I just ladore the size of it, as well as the clear 2.8inch screen. The functions are more or less like O2 Xda Atom, only thing is, it's operating under Windows Mobile 6. As the phone is only released 3 days ago here, I'd better wait for a while before buying it. Who knows the first batch of phones are defective? Aurelia is always unlucky. She might buy another devastating defective phone! ;p
